Reggio Calabria

Located on the southernmost point of the Italian boot, at the feet of the Aspromonte mountains, Reggio Calabria enjoys a breathtaking view on Sicily, Mount Etna and the Aeolian Islands. Its archeological Museum hosts the Riace Bronzes.

Thanks to its mild and sunny weather throughout the year, and the strategical spot it enjoys on the Mediterranean, Reggio Calabria has been one of the most contended cities over the centuries among the populations which in turns were in charge there.
First founded by the Greeks on a pre-existing site inhabited by local populations, then turned into an important Roman centre, for some time it was also under the lead of the Byzantines and Saracens.

The city was later almost entirely destroyed by an earthquake in 1908, and then seriously damaged by the II World War bombings, only to be rebuilt later on for the most part.
Although it currently showcases a historical city centre with many liberty, neo gothic and neoclassical buildings, some archeological sites with remains from the Greek and Roman periods can still be viewed.
