Palermo

Main Sicilian multifaceted city, where Arabic and Baroque influences cohabit, together with Art Nouveau palaces, Neoclassical theatres, XVIII century green areas and crowded historical market places. Without forgetting the typical gastronomy of the island.

The list of sites to visit is extremely rich: the Cathedral, completed in 1185 and consecrated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary; the Palatine Chapel and the Palace of the Normans, also known as the Royal Palace, one of the main city monuments, built in the IX century by the Arabs and later modified by the Normans; Palermo’s Capuchin Catacombs, underground cemetery of the Capuchin monastery; the Pretoria Fountain, realised in the XVI century and located in the homonymous square, it is surrounded by stunning palaces, among which Palace Pretorio (house to the Town Hall).

Do not miss a visit to the multicoloured historical city markets, among which Vucciria remains the most famous one, represented in a painting by Renato Guttuso.

And for a taste pampering journey: saffron, pistachios, dairy products, rickley pears, ‘granite’ (typical Sicilian slush) and ‘arancine’ (stuffed fried rice balls) are but just a few elements and food used in the creative Sicilian cuisine.
